About the LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery set

Discovery with the Hubble Space Telescope, as she flew into space on mission STS-31 in 1990. The payload bay opens, the robotic arm moves, the landing gear extends and the elevons can be adjusted. Under the opening cockpit are the flight and mid decks with five seats. The telescope has movable solar panels and an aperture door, fits in the payload bay and can be lifted out with the arm. That is exactly what this mission was about.

The orbiter and the telescope are separate stages, and Hubble on its own is a short interlude of about an hour. For 2’354 pieces, 7 to 9 hours is realistic, with most of the time going into the fuselage. Finished, the orbiter is 54 cm long and 34 cm wide, and with the telescope and stands you need a whole shelf compartment. LEGO took the set off the market at the end of 2024. Rented, you still get to build it, without paying a collector’s price.

Common questions about the LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery

How long does the LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery take to build?

Allow 7 to 9 hours for the 2354 pieces. The orbiter and the Hubble telescope are separate stages, and the telescope on its own is a short interlude of about an hour. Most of the time goes into the orbiter's fuselage.

How big is the LEGO Space Shuttle Discovery once built?

The orbiter is 54 cm long, 34 cm wide and 21 cm high. The Hubble telescope comes on top of that as a model of its own, on its own stand. Together they fill a normal shelf compartment.

Can you still buy the LEGO Space Shuttle Discovery?

No, LEGO took set 10283 off the market at the end of 2024. New it cost CHF 209.–, and since then it is only available second-hand or from resellers.

Is the LEGO Space Shuttle Discovery hard to build?

It is rated 18+, but it is not technically complicated. What it asks for is stamina, because the fuselage is made of many similar sections in white and black. If you have built a larger Icons model before, you will get through without detours.

What moves on the LEGO Space Shuttle?

The payload bay opens, the robotic arm moves, the landing gear extends and the elevons can be adjusted. Under the opening cockpit are the flight and mid decks with five seats. The Hubble telescope fits in the payload bay and can be lifted out with the arm.

Questions about the BlockAbo rental model

How does BlockAbo actually work?

You pick a set from our collection and we send it to your door for free. You build it, keep it as long as you like, and send it back when you are ready for the next one. After a month at the earliest, with no upper limit. Then you choose your next set.

What does BlockAbo cost and what is included?

There are three options: the single rental at a one-off CHF 42.–, the monthly plan at CHF 39.– per month and the yearly plan at CHF 29.– per month. Included are the complete set, delivery to you and the cleaning. You cover the return, and the label is already in the box.

Can I cancel the subscription at any time?

Yes. The monthly plan can be cancelled to the end of any month, with no reason and no notice period. You send the set back and that is that. The yearly plan commits you for twelve months and costs about a quarter less per month in return.

How hygienic are rented LEGO sets?

Every set goes through our quality check after it comes back, before it goes out again. We check its condition, wash the sets regularly at 30 °C with soap and keep track of whether every piece is there. That way a clean and complete set reaches you.

Why are all the pieces mixed in one bag?

The sets are checked between rentals and washed regularly. That is why the numbered bags from the original packaging are gone, and you get all the pieces loose in one large wash bag. Up to about 2'000 pieces you build straight from the bag; for bigger sets a bit of sorting first is worth it. For the return you sort nothing: take the set fully apart and put every piece back in the wash bag.

Why are there no building instructions in the box?

Paper instructions and sticker sheets do not last many rentals, so we send the sets without them. The instructions for every set are free at lego.com/en-ch/service/building-instructions and in the LEGO Builder app. Search there by set number or name.

What happens if pieces are missing or break?

Up to ten lost small pieces are no problem and are included in the price. It happens, vacuum cleaners are merciless. We only get in touch for larger damage or missing large pieces. You do not have to go over the carpet with tweezers.

How fast does the set reach me?

Orders placed before 14:00 go out the same working day. After that Swiss Post usually takes one to two working days. We deliver anywhere in Switzerland and delivery to you is free.

Why is renting more sustainable than buying?

A LEGO set is usually built once and then sits on a shelf or in a cellar for years. With us the same set passes through eight to ten people. For the same number of sets built, that is up to 90 % less newly produced plastic.
