About the LEGO Rough Terrain Crane set

A two-axle rough terrain crane in red and black, and with over 4’000 pieces the largest crane LEGO Technic had built up to then. A single Power Functions motor drives everything: a lever switches between the lower and upper sections, then you lower the four outriggers, turn the superstructure through 360 degrees, extend the boom and work the winch. Fully extended, the crane stands a metre tall. Four-wheel steering, a V8 with moving pistons and two storage lockers with tools complete it.

Plan on 10 to 14 hours. Most of the time goes into the chassis and the distribution gearbox, which has to be built exactly to the instructions, or you only find the mistake at the first test. Ready to drive, the model is 76 cm long. LEGO took it off the shelves at the end of 2020; rented, you build it without paying a collector’s price.

Common questions about the LEGO Rough Terrain Crane

How long does the LEGO Rough Terrain Crane (42082) take to build?

Plan on 10 to 14 hours for the 4057 pieces. The chassis takes longest, with its four-wheel steering, four-wheel drive and the distribution gearbox that splits the single motor between the lower and upper sections. The boom goes comparatively quickly after that.

How big is the LEGO Rough Terrain Crane when built?

Ready to drive, the crane is 76 cm long, 20 cm wide and 27 cm high. In working position, with the outriggers down and the boom extended, it reaches 100 cm. It is too long for a shelf, but sits well on a sideboard or on the floor.

Can you still buy the LEGO Rough Terrain Crane?

No. LEGO took set 42082 off the shelves at the end of 2020, and new copies now only come from collectors. There has been no re-release. Renting is the easiest way to build the crane yourself once more.

What does the motor on the LEGO crane do?

A single Power Functions motor drives everything. A lever switches between the lower and upper sections: below, you lower the four outriggers; above, you turn the superstructure through 360 degrees, extend the boom and work the winch. Steering and wheel drive are manual, as are the pistons in the V8.

Can you build anything else from set 42082?

Yes, the second model is a mobile pile driver, a truck with a piling rig. Ready to drive it is 50 cm long, 20 cm wide and 24 cm high. To switch, you take the crane apart completely.

Questions about the BlockAbo rental model

How does BlockAbo actually work?

You pick a set from our collection and we send it to your door for free. You build it, keep it as long as you like, and send it back when you are ready for the next one. After a month at the earliest, with no upper limit. Then you choose your next set.

What does BlockAbo cost and what is included?

There are three options: the single rental at a one-off CHF 42.–, the monthly plan at CHF 39.– per month and the yearly plan at CHF 29.– per month. Included are the complete set, the instructions, delivery to you and the cleaning. You cover the return, and the label is already in the box.

Can I cancel the subscription at any time?

Yes. The monthly plan can be cancelled to the end of any month, with no reason and no notice period. You send the set back and that is that. The yearly plan commits you for twelve months and costs about a quarter less per month in return.

How hygienic are rented LEGO sets?

Every set is washed at 30 °C with soap after it comes back, dried, and checked brick by brick for completeness. Only then does it go out again. So you never get a set somebody else has been through unchecked.

What happens if pieces are missing or break?

Up to ten lost small pieces are no problem and are included in the price. It happens, vacuum cleaners are merciless. We only get in touch for larger damage or missing large pieces. You do not have to go over the carpet with tweezers.

How fast does the set reach me?

Orders placed before 14:00 go out the same working day. After that Swiss Post usually takes one to two working days. We deliver anywhere in Switzerland and delivery to you is free.

Why is renting more sustainable than buying?

A LEGO set is usually built once and then sits on a shelf or in a cellar for years. With us the same set passes through eight to ten people. For the same number of sets built, that is up to 90 % less newly produced plastic.
