About the LEGO Crane Truck set

A red four-axle tractor unit with a yellow loader crane behind the cab. A Power Functions XL motor with battery box and switch drives the crane through a gearbox: it unfolds, raises and lowers, swings through 360 degrees, and the same drive extends the four outriggers. Both front axles steer, and the cab tilts forward to show a V8 with moving pistons. The second model is a tow truck.

Plan on 10 to 14 hours. The gearbox is built directly on the chassis, and a mistake there only shows when the crane does not do what it should. It is not strong, and it will not lift heavy loads. LEGO took the set off the shelves at the end of 2011; renting it, you build it without paying a collector’s price.

Common questions about the LEGO Crane Truck

How long does the LEGO Crane Truck (8258) take to build?

Plan on 10 to 14 hours for the 1877 pieces. The gearbox is built straight onto the chassis rather than as a separate module, and that is where most of the time goes. The cab and the crane go more quickly after that.

How big is the LEGO Crane Truck when built?

LEGO gives the model as 53 by 56 cm. The four-axle truck is roughly half a metre long, and with the crane raised it reaches about as high. It is too big for a normal shelf, but sits well on a sideboard.

Can you still buy the LEGO Crane Truck?

No. Set 8258 came out in 2009 and has not been available since the end of 2011. New copies now only come from collectors, at several times the original price. There has been no re-release.

What does the motor on the LEGO crane truck 8258 do?

A single Power Functions XL motor drives the crane through a gearbox: it unfolds it, raises and lowers it, swings it through 360 degrees and extends the four outriggers. You lower the outriggers by hand, and the last boom section and the winch are manual too.

What else moves on the truck?

Both front axles steer, and the cab tilts forward to reveal a V8 with moving pistons. There is a fifth wheel coupling at the back. From the same pieces you can build a tow truck as the second model.

Questions about the BlockAbo rental model

How does BlockAbo actually work?

You pick a set from our collection and we send it to your door for free. You build it, keep it as long as you like, and send it back when you are ready for the next one. After a month at the earliest, with no upper limit. Then you choose your next set.

What does BlockAbo cost and what is included?

There are three options: the single rental at a one-off CHF 42.–, the monthly plan at CHF 39.– per month and the yearly plan at CHF 29.– per month. Included are the complete set, delivery to you and the cleaning. You cover the return, and the label is already in the box.

Can I cancel the subscription at any time?

Yes. The monthly plan can be cancelled to the end of any month, with no reason and no notice period. You send the set back and that is that. The yearly plan commits you for twelve months and costs about a quarter less per month in return.

How hygienic are rented LEGO sets?

Every set goes through our quality check after it comes back, before it goes out again. We check its condition, wash the sets regularly at 30 °C with soap and keep track of whether every piece is there. That way a clean and complete set reaches you.

Why are all the pieces mixed in one bag?

The sets are checked between rentals and washed regularly. That is why the numbered bags from the original packaging are gone, and you get all the pieces loose in one large wash bag. Up to about 2'000 pieces you build straight from the bag; for bigger sets a bit of sorting first is worth it. For the return you sort nothing: take the set fully apart and put every piece back in the wash bag.

Why are there no building instructions in the box?

Paper instructions and sticker sheets do not last many rentals, so we send the sets without them. The instructions for every set are free at lego.com/en-ch/service/building-instructions and in the LEGO Builder app. Search there by set number or name.

What happens if pieces are missing or break?

Up to ten lost small pieces are no problem and are included in the price. It happens, vacuum cleaners are merciless. We only get in touch for larger damage or missing large pieces. You do not have to go over the carpet with tweezers.

How fast does the set reach me?

Orders placed before 14:00 go out the same working day. After that Swiss Post usually takes one to two working days. We deliver anywhere in Switzerland and delivery to you is free.

Why is renting more sustainable than buying?

A LEGO set is usually built once and then sits on a shelf or in a cellar for years. With us the same set passes through eight to ten people. For the same number of sets built, that is up to 90 % less newly produced plastic.
