About the LEGO John Deere 948L-II Skidder set

The John Deere 948L-II is a grapple skidder: it drags felled trunks out of the forest in its grapple. The Technic model has articulated steering on two large turntables, four-wheel drive with pendulum axles and a six-cylinder engine whose pistons move as you push it along. You steer with the gear on the cab roof, and the driver’s seat turns slightly with it. The grapple arm at the back runs on pneumatics through a hand pump, and you raise the blade at the front with a wheel on the cab.

Allow 5 to 7 hours. The chassis and the front go quickly; the hoses in the last bag take patience, because each one has to be pushed fully home. Built, the skidder is 53 cm long and fits on a sideboard. LEGO withdrew the set at the end of 2024, so renting lets you build it without hunting for leftover stock.

Common questions about the LEGO John Deere 948L-II Skidder

How long does the LEGO Technic John Deere Skidder (42157) take to build?

Allow 5 to 7 hours for the 1'492 pieces. The chassis, the articulated steering and the front go quickly. The pneumatics in the last of the four bags take the most patience, because every hose has to be pushed fully home and routed neatly.

How big is the LEGO John Deere 948L-II Skidder when built?

The model is 53 cm long, 19 cm wide and 21 cm high. It fits the depth of a normal shelf, but it needs a good half metre of length. It sits well on a sideboard.

Can you still buy the LEGO John Deere Skidder 42157?

No. The set came out in June 2023 at CHF 199.– and LEGO withdrew it at the end of 2024. New, you will only find it as remaining stock at retailers, otherwise second-hand. No re-release has been announced.

Is the LEGO John Deere Skidder hard to build?

For a set rated 11+, it is demanding. The mechanics in the chassis are easy to follow; the hoses are where it gets difficult. If one is not fully on its connector it pops off again, and badly routed hoses get in the way of the arm at the end of its travel. If you have built a mid-sized Technic set before, you will get through it fine.

How do the pneumatics on the LEGO John Deere Skidder work?

With a hand pump that doubles as the exhaust. Behind the cab you use switches to choose which cylinder gets air: two pairs of cylinders raise the arm and bend its second section, and a single cylinder opens and closes the grapple. The model has no air tank, so after some vigorous pumping the air lasts for a few movements. The grapple can only be rotated by hand.

Questions about the BlockAbo rental model

How does BlockAbo actually work?

You pick a set from our collection and we send it to your door for free. You build it, keep it as long as you like, and send it back when you are ready for the next one. After a month at the earliest, with no upper limit. Then you choose your next set.

What does BlockAbo cost and what is included?

There are three options: the single rental at a one-off CHF 42.–, the monthly plan at CHF 39.– per month and the yearly plan at CHF 29.– per month. Included are the complete set, delivery to you and the cleaning. You cover the return, and the label is already in the box.

Can I cancel the subscription at any time?

Yes. The monthly plan can be cancelled to the end of any month, with no reason and no notice period. You send the set back and that is that. The yearly plan commits you for twelve months and costs about a quarter less per month in return.

How hygienic are rented LEGO sets?

Every set goes through our quality check after it comes back, before it goes out again. We check its condition, wash the sets regularly at 30 °C with soap and keep track of whether every piece is there. That way a clean and complete set reaches you.

Why are all the pieces mixed in one bag?

The sets are checked between rentals and washed regularly. That is why the numbered bags from the original packaging are gone, and you get all the pieces loose in one large wash bag. Up to about 2'000 pieces you build straight from the bag; for bigger sets a bit of sorting first is worth it. For the return you sort nothing: take the set fully apart and put every piece back in the wash bag.

Why are there no building instructions in the box?

Paper instructions and sticker sheets do not last many rentals, so we send the sets without them. The instructions for every set are free at lego.com/en-ch/service/building-instructions and in the LEGO Builder app. Search there by set number or name.

What happens if pieces are missing or break?

Up to ten lost small pieces are no problem and are included in the price. It happens, vacuum cleaners are merciless. We only get in touch for larger damage or missing large pieces. You do not have to go over the carpet with tweezers.

How fast does the set reach me?

Orders placed before 14:00 go out the same working day. After that Swiss Post usually takes one to two working days. We deliver anywhere in Switzerland and delivery to you is free.

Why is renting more sustainable than buying?

A LEGO set is usually built once and then sits on a shelf or in a cellar for years. With us the same set passes through eight to ten people. For the same number of sets built, that is up to 90 % less newly produced plastic.
