About the LEGO Typewriter set
The Typewriter is modelled on the machine Ole Kirk Kristiansen, the founder of LEGO, wrote on. Press a letter key and the middle typebar lifts and the carriage moves along, with the clack of a real machine. Which key you press makes no difference: it is always the same typebar, so it cannot actually type. You can feed real paper into the platen, and a booklet supplies a letter from Thomas Kirk Kristiansen for it in 43 languages.
For the 2’079 pieces, 6 to 8 hours is realistic. Much of it goes into the rows of keys and the mechanism underneath, which is very repetitive. Finished, the model is 27 cm wide, 26 cm deep and only 11 cm high, so it fits on any desk. LEGO retired the Ideas set at the end of 2024. Rented, you tap away at it for a few weeks and then send it back.
Common questions about the LEGO Typewriter
How long does the LEGO Typewriter (21327) take to build?
Plan on 6 to 8 hours for the 2079 pieces. The casing goes quickly. Most of the time goes into the rows of keys and the mechanism underneath, and that part is very repetitive.
How big is the LEGO Typewriter when built?
The typewriter is 27 cm wide, 26 cm deep and 11 cm high. That makes it take up about as much room as a laptop, so it fits on any desk or a wide shelf.
Can you still buy the LEGO Typewriter?
No. The Ideas set 21327 came out in summer 2021 and was retired at the end of 2024. New, it cost CHF 269.–, and since then it is only available second-hand. Rented, you build it once without having to find a place for it afterwards.
Can you actually type with the LEGO Typewriter?
No. When you press a letter key, the same middle typebar always lifts and the carriage moves along, whichever key it was. No letter lands on the paper. You can still feed real paper into the platen, the enclosed letter for example.
What does the LEGO Typewriter have to do with LEGO history?
It is modelled on the typewriter Ole Kirk Kristiansen, the founder of the LEGO Group, wrote on. It comes with a booklet holding a letter from Thomas Kirk Kristiansen, of the fourth generation of the owning family, in 43 languages. You tear out your language and feed it into the platen.
Questions about the BlockAbo rental model
How does BlockAbo actually work?
You pick a set from our collection and we send it to your door for free. You build it, keep it as long as you like, and send it back when you are ready for the next one. After a month at the earliest, with no upper limit. Then you choose your next set.
What does BlockAbo cost and what is included?
There are three options: the single rental at a one-off CHF 42.–, the monthly plan at CHF 39.– per month and the yearly plan at CHF 29.– per month. Included are the complete set, delivery to you and the cleaning. You cover the return, and the label is already in the box.
Can I cancel the subscription at any time?
Yes. The monthly plan can be cancelled to the end of any month, with no reason and no notice period. You send the set back and that is that. The yearly plan commits you for twelve months and costs about a quarter less per month in return.
How hygienic are rented LEGO sets?
Every set is washed at 30 °C with soap after it comes back, dried, and checked brick by brick for completeness. Only then does it go out again. So you never get a set somebody else has been through unchecked.
Why are all the pieces mixed in one bag?
After every rental the set is washed and checked brick by brick for completeness. After that the numbered bags from the original packaging are gone, and you get all the pieces loose in one large wash bag. Up to about 2'000 pieces you build straight from the bag; for bigger sets a bit of sorting first is worth it. For the return you sort nothing: take the set fully apart and put every piece back in the wash bag.
Why are there no building instructions in the box?
Paper instructions and sticker sheets do not last many rentals, so we send the sets without them. The instructions for every set are free at lego.com/en-ch/service/building-instructions and in the LEGO Builder app. Search there by set number or name.
What happens if pieces are missing or break?
Up to ten lost small pieces are no problem and are included in the price. It happens, vacuum cleaners are merciless. We only get in touch for larger damage or missing large pieces. You do not have to go over the carpet with tweezers.
How fast does the set reach me?
Orders placed before 14:00 go out the same working day. After that Swiss Post usually takes one to two working days. We deliver anywhere in Switzerland and delivery to you is free.
Why is renting more sustainable than buying?
A LEGO set is usually built once and then sits on a shelf or in a cellar for years. With us the same set passes through eight to ten people. For the same number of sets built, that is up to 90 % less newly produced plastic.
