About the LEGO Tropical Aquarium set

The Tropical Aquarium is a tank without water: a black frame, a turquoise back wall with a wave pattern, and in front of it a reef of corals, sea anemones, water plants and sea worms. Four fish swim in front. Turn the wheels and cranks and the fish move, the corals sway, a crab comes out of its cave and a treasure chest opens. There is also an oyster with a pearl, sea snails and air bubbles made from transparent parts.

With 4’154 pieces, 14 to 18 hours is realistic. The frame and the mechanism go together quickly; the time goes into the reef, where lots of small, similar parts have to sit exactly right. Built, the tank measures 52 × 28 × 36 cm and fills a whole sideboard, and it costs CHF 469.– new. Rented, you build it once, turn the cranks for a few weeks and send it back before it gathers dust.

Common questions about the LEGO Tropical Aquarium

How long does the LEGO Tropical Aquarium take to build?

Reckon on 14 to 18 hours. With 4'154 pieces, most of the time goes into the reef with its many small coral and plant parts, not into the frame. The mechanism for the fish, the crab and the treasure chest goes in early and should sit exactly as the instructions say, so that everything turns easily later.

How big is the LEGO Tropical Aquarium once built?

It is 52 cm wide, 28 cm deep and 36 cm high. That takes up almost all of a chest of drawers or a sideboard, and it will not fit on a narrow shelf. The back wall is closed, so the tank looks best against a wall.

Can you still buy the LEGO Tropical Aquarium?

Yes, set 10366 is currently available in the LEGO Shop and costs CHF 469.– new. LEGO has not announced a retirement date.

Is the LEGO Tropical Aquarium hard to build?

Not hard, but fiddly. The set is rated 18+, and the real work is the corals: lots of similar pieces in unusual colours, assembled in small groups. If you have built the Botanical Garden, you know this way of building.

What moves on the LEGO Tropical Aquarium?

Four things: the fish swim, the corals sway, a crab comes out of its cave and a treasure chest opens. Everything is worked by wheels and cranks, with no motor and no batteries.

Questions about the BlockAbo rental model

How does BlockAbo actually work?

You pick a set from our collection and we send it to your door for free. You build it, keep it as long as you like, and send it back when you are ready for the next one. After a month at the earliest, with no upper limit. Then you choose your next set.

What does BlockAbo cost and what is included?

There are three options: the single rental at a one-off CHF 42.–, the monthly plan at CHF 39.– per month and the yearly plan at CHF 29.– per month. Included are the complete set, the instructions, delivery to you and the cleaning. You cover the return, and the label is already in the box.

Can I cancel the subscription at any time?

Yes. The monthly plan can be cancelled to the end of any month, with no reason and no notice period. You send the set back and that is that. The yearly plan commits you for twelve months and costs about a quarter less per month in return.

How hygienic are rented LEGO sets?

Every set is washed at 30 °C with soap after it comes back, dried, and checked brick by brick for completeness. Only then does it go out again. So you never get a set somebody else has been through unchecked.

What happens if pieces are missing or break?

Up to ten lost small pieces are no problem and are included in the price. It happens, vacuum cleaners are merciless. We only get in touch for larger damage or missing large pieces. You do not have to go over the carpet with tweezers.

How fast does the set reach me?

Orders placed before 14:00 go out the same working day. After that Swiss Post usually takes one to two working days. We deliver anywhere in Switzerland and delivery to you is free.

Why is renting more sustainable than buying?

A LEGO set is usually built once and then sits on a shelf or in a cellar for years. With us the same set passes through eight to ten people. For the same number of sets built, that is up to 90 % less newly produced plastic.
