About the LEGO Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night set

Van Gogh’s Starry Night from 1889 as a relief in LEGO bricks, made together with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where the original hangs. The sky is built in several layers: the swirls, stars and moon stand out from the surface, and the cypress reaches far in front of the picture. On the side of the frame sits an adjustable arm with the Vincent van Gogh minifigure in front of an easel holding a miniature of the painting.

The 2’316 pieces take 5 to 7 hours. The frame is quick and somewhat monotonous; the time goes into the sky, where you lay small plates layer by layer into the swirls. On the wall the picture needs 38 × 28 cm and stands out 12 cm. LEGO has sold the set since 2022, and new it costs CHF 179.–. Rented, it hangs at your place for a few weeks, and then the wall is free again.

Common questions about the LEGO Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night

How long does the LEGO Starry Night (21333) take to build?

Plan on 5 to 7 hours for the 2316 pieces. The black frame goes quickly. Most of the time goes into the sky, which is made of many small plates and round pieces in several layers.

How big is the LEGO Starry Night when built?

The picture is 38 cm wide, 28 cm high and 12 cm deep. On the wall it takes up about as much space as a small framed print, but the cypress makes it stand well out from the wall.

Can you still buy the LEGO Starry Night?

Yes. LEGO has sold Ideas set 21333 since 2022, in Switzerland for CHF 179.–. Brickset lists the end of 2026 as its expected retirement date.

Can you hang the LEGO Starry Night on the wall?

Yes. The model has a hook that hangs it on a nail. You can also stand it freely on a shelf or sideboard. The arm with Vincent van Gogh at his easel is adjustable.

Is the LEGO Starry Night hard to build?

Not hard, but unfamiliar. The set is rated 18+ and has no mechanism. What is new for many builders are the techniques that use curved pieces and angled plates to recreate the brushstrokes and swirls.

Questions about the BlockAbo rental model

How does BlockAbo actually work?

You pick a set from our collection and we send it to your door for free. You build it, keep it as long as you like, and send it back when you are ready for the next one. After a month at the earliest, with no upper limit. Then you choose your next set.

What does BlockAbo cost and what is included?

There are three options: the single rental at a one-off CHF 42.–, the monthly plan at CHF 39.– per month and the yearly plan at CHF 29.– per month. Included are the complete set, delivery to you and the cleaning. You cover the return, and the label is already in the box.

Can I cancel the subscription at any time?

Yes. The monthly plan can be cancelled to the end of any month, with no reason and no notice period. You send the set back and that is that. The yearly plan commits you for twelve months and costs about a quarter less per month in return.

How hygienic are rented LEGO sets?

Every set is washed at 30 °C with soap after it comes back, dried, and checked brick by brick for completeness. Only then does it go out again. So you never get a set somebody else has been through unchecked.

Why are all the pieces mixed in one bag?

After every rental the set is washed and checked brick by brick for completeness. After that the numbered bags from the original packaging are gone, and you get all the pieces loose in one large wash bag. Up to about 2'000 pieces you build straight from the bag; for bigger sets a bit of sorting first is worth it. For the return you sort nothing: take the set fully apart and put every piece back in the wash bag.

Why are there no building instructions in the box?

Paper instructions and sticker sheets do not last many rentals, so we send the sets without them. The instructions for every set are free at lego.com/en-ch/service/building-instructions and in the LEGO Builder app. Search there by set number or name.

What happens if pieces are missing or break?

Up to ten lost small pieces are no problem and are included in the price. It happens, vacuum cleaners are merciless. We only get in touch for larger damage or missing large pieces. You do not have to go over the carpet with tweezers.

How fast does the set reach me?

Orders placed before 14:00 go out the same working day. After that Swiss Post usually takes one to two working days. We deliver anywhere in Switzerland and delivery to you is free.

Why is renting more sustainable than buying?

A LEGO set is usually built once and then sits on a shelf or in a cellar for years. With us the same set passes through eight to ten people. For the same number of sets built, that is up to 90 % less newly produced plastic.
