About the LEGO McLaren Formula 1 Race Car set
The first of the large Technic Formula 1 cars: McLaren at roughly 1:8 scale, 65 cm long and built from 1’432 pieces. The shape follows the 2022 MCL36, the livery is papaya orange and blue. At the back sits a V6 with moving pistons, connected to the rear axle through a differential; both axles are sprung, and you steer with the wheel in the cockpit. The rear wing can be raised like the DRS, though by hand. Treaded tyres and stickered wheel covers differ from the real car.
Allow 5 to 7 hours. The mechanism comes together quickly; most of the time goes into the layered body panels and around 60 stickers. Finished, the car takes a 65 cm shelf to itself. The set has been off the shelves since the end of 2025. Rented, it stays with you for a few weeks and takes up no space afterwards.
Common questions about the LEGO McLaren Formula 1 Race Car
How long does the LEGO McLaren Formula 1 Race Car (42141) take to build?
Allow 5 to 7 hours for the 1'432 pieces, easily done over two evenings. The rear axle, differential and engine come first, then the chassis and front suspension. Around 60 stickers for the sponsor logos come on top, and they need to sit straight.
How big is the LEGO McLaren Formula 1 Race Car once built?
The model is 65 cm long, 27 cm wide and 13 cm high, roughly Technic's 1:8 scale. It needs a shelf a good 65 cm wide to itself; the usual 30 cm of depth is enough. Flat as it is, it also sits well on a sideboard.
Can you still buy the LEGO McLaren Formula 1 Race Car?
No, not on regular sale any more. Set 42141 came out in March 2022 and was retired at the end of 2025. Since then new copies are only found with clearance sellers or second hand. If you want to build it once, you do not need to hunt one down.
Is the LEGO McLaren Formula 1 Race Car hard to build?
No, for an 18+ set it is very manageable. With steering, suspension, a differential and a V6, it has far less mechanism than the big Technic supercars. What takes more care are the layered orange panels, which leave gaps if they are not seated properly.
What functions does the LEGO McLaren Formula 1 Race Car have?
A V6 with moving pistons, connected to the rear axle through a differential, suspension front and rear, and steering through the wheel in the cockpit. The rear wing can be raised like the real car's DRS, though by hand. The set has no motor to drive it.
Questions about the BlockAbo rental model
How does BlockAbo actually work?
You pick a set from our collection and we send it to your door for free. You build it, keep it as long as you like, and send it back when you are ready for the next one. After a month at the earliest, with no upper limit. Then you choose your next set.
What does BlockAbo cost and what is included?
There are three options: the single rental at a one-off CHF 42.–, the monthly plan at CHF 39.– per month and the yearly plan at CHF 29.– per month. Included are the complete set, delivery to you and the cleaning. You cover the return, and the label is already in the box.
Can I cancel the subscription at any time?
Yes. The monthly plan can be cancelled to the end of any month, with no reason and no notice period. You send the set back and that is that. The yearly plan commits you for twelve months and costs about a quarter less per month in return.
How hygienic are rented LEGO sets?
Every set goes through our quality check after it comes back, before it goes out again. We check its condition, wash the sets regularly at 30 °C with soap and keep track of whether every piece is there. That way a clean and complete set reaches you.
Why are all the pieces mixed in one bag?
The sets are checked between rentals and washed regularly. That is why the numbered bags from the original packaging are gone, and you get all the pieces loose in one large wash bag. Up to about 2'000 pieces you build straight from the bag; for bigger sets a bit of sorting first is worth it. For the return you sort nothing: take the set fully apart and put every piece back in the wash bag.
Why are there no building instructions in the box?
Paper instructions and sticker sheets do not last many rentals, so we send the sets without them. The instructions for every set are free at lego.com/en-ch/service/building-instructions and in the LEGO Builder app. Search there by set number or name.
What happens if pieces are missing or break?
Up to ten lost small pieces are no problem and are included in the price. It happens, vacuum cleaners are merciless. We only get in touch for larger damage or missing large pieces. You do not have to go over the carpet with tweezers.
How fast does the set reach me?
Orders placed before 14:00 go out the same working day. After that Swiss Post usually takes one to two working days. We deliver anywhere in Switzerland and delivery to you is free.
Why is renting more sustainable than buying?
A LEGO set is usually built once and then sits on a shelf or in a cellar for years. With us the same set passes through eight to ten people. For the same number of sets built, that is up to 90 % less newly produced plastic.
