About the LEGO Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance set

The W14 is the car Mercedes raced in Formula 1 in 2023, and LEGO has rebuilt it from 1’642 pieces in Technic’s 1:8 scale. Under the removable engine cover sit a V6 with moving pistons and the differential. You can steer it in two ways: with the steering wheel in the cockpit or with a knob on top of the car. The rear wing opens like the real car’s DRS, and much of the black and teal livery comes from stickers.

Allow 6 to 8 hours. Most of the time goes into the chassis, drivetrain and steering; the sidepods and wings come together quickly afterwards, though the stickers need patience. Finished, the car is 63 cm long and 26 cm wide, which takes up nearly a whole shelf. It is still available from LEGO and costs CHF 229.– new. Rented, it stays with you for a few weeks and takes up no space afterwards.

Common questions about the LEGO Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance

How long does the LEGO Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 (42171) take to build?

Allow 6 to 8 hours for the 1'642 pieces, spread over two or three evenings. Chassis, drivetrain and steering take longest, and that is where you count axles and pins carefully. The many stickers on the bodywork and wings are worth a quiet extra hour.

How big is the LEGO Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 once built?

The model is 63 cm long, 26 cm wide and 13 cm high, in Technic's 1:8 scale. It needs a shelf a good 65 cm wide to itself; the usual 30 cm of depth is enough. Next to the Ferrari SF-24, the other 1:8 Technic F1 car, it is 2 cm longer.

Can you still buy the LEGO Mercedes-AMG F1 W14?

Yes. Set 42171 came out in March 2024 and is still on regular sale at LEGO, at CHF 229.– new. Licensed Technic cars rarely stay in the range for more than two or three years. If you only want to build it once, you do not need to buy it for that.

Is the LEGO Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 hard to build?

No, for an 18+ set it is very manageable. With steering, a differential, a V6 and a folding rear wing, it has less mechanism than the big Technic supercars. What takes more care are the many black panels that look alike, and the large stickers that have to sit straight.

Can you steer the LEGO Mercedes-AMG F1 W14?

Yes, in two ways. A steering wheel in the cockpit turns the front wheels, and a knob on top of the car lets you steer without reaching into the cockpit. The rear wing also opens like the real car's DRS, and under the removable engine cover you can see the V6's pistons.

Questions about the BlockAbo rental model

How does BlockAbo actually work?

You pick a set from our collection and we send it to your door for free. You build it, keep it as long as you like, and send it back when you are ready for the next one. After a month at the earliest, with no upper limit. Then you choose your next set.

What does BlockAbo cost and what is included?

There are three options: the single rental at a one-off CHF 42.–, the monthly plan at CHF 39.– per month and the yearly plan at CHF 29.– per month. Included are the complete set, delivery to you and the cleaning. You cover the return, and the label is already in the box.

Can I cancel the subscription at any time?

Yes. The monthly plan can be cancelled to the end of any month, with no reason and no notice period. You send the set back and that is that. The yearly plan commits you for twelve months and costs about a quarter less per month in return.

How hygienic are rented LEGO sets?

Every set goes through our quality check after it comes back, before it goes out again. We check its condition, wash the sets regularly at 30 °C with soap and keep track of whether every piece is there. That way a clean and complete set reaches you.

Why are all the pieces mixed in one bag?

The sets are checked between rentals and washed regularly. That is why the numbered bags from the original packaging are gone, and you get all the pieces loose in one large wash bag. Up to about 2'000 pieces you build straight from the bag; for bigger sets a bit of sorting first is worth it. For the return you sort nothing: take the set fully apart and put every piece back in the wash bag.

Why are there no building instructions in the box?

Paper instructions and sticker sheets do not last many rentals, so we send the sets without them. The instructions for every set are free at lego.com/en-ch/service/building-instructions and in the LEGO Builder app. Search there by set number or name.

What happens if pieces are missing or break?

Up to ten lost small pieces are no problem and are included in the price. It happens, vacuum cleaners are merciless. We only get in touch for larger damage or missing large pieces. You do not have to go over the carpet with tweezers.

How fast does the set reach me?

Orders placed before 14:00 go out the same working day. After that Swiss Post usually takes one to two working days. We deliver anywhere in Switzerland and delivery to you is free.

Why is renting more sustainable than buying?

A LEGO set is usually built once and then sits on a shelf or in a cellar for years. With us the same set passes through eight to ten people. For the same number of sets built, that is up to 90 % less newly produced plastic.
