About the LEGO Empire State Building set
The Empire State Building from the Architecture range is 55 cm tall and stands on a footprint of just 20 × 12 cm. When it came out in 2019 it was the tallest model in the range. The four façades are clad in 684 tan 1 × 2 grille tiles that follow the vertical window bands of the original. Underneath is a core of bricks with studs on their sides. The mast of silver parts sits on top, and at the bottom is Fifth Avenue with yellow taxis and a printed nameplate. There are no minifigures.
The 1’767 pieces take 5 to 7 hours. The grille tiles sound like drudgery, and the four side sections repeat. Because there are hardly any 1 × 1 parts, you still make quick progress. Finished, the model fits on any shelf but needs 55 cm of headroom. LEGO retired the set at the end of 2021; new, it cost CHF 129.–. Rented, it stays with you for a few weeks and then goes back.
Common questions about the LEGO Empire State Building
How long does the LEGO Empire State Building (21046) take to build?
Allow 5 to 7 hours for the 1'767 pieces. Most of the time goes into the façades and their 684 1 × 2 grille tiles. Because there are hardly any 1 × 1 parts that need lining up exactly, it goes faster than the piece count suggests.
How big is the LEGO Empire State Building when built?
The model is 55 cm tall, 20 cm wide and 12 cm deep. It fits any shelf in width, but in height it needs an open compartment, a windowsill or a sideboard. The observation deck on the 102nd floor sits at about 38 cm.
Can you still buy the LEGO Empire State Building 21046?
No. Set 21046 came out in June 2019 and was retired at the end of 2021; new, it cost CHF 129.– in Switzerland. Since then it has only been available from resellers, usually for more than it used to cost. Rent it and you can still build it.
Is the LEGO Empire State Building hard to build?
No. The 16+ age rating is more about patience than difficult technique. The tower grows from five stacked core sections with studs on their sides, onto which you fit the clad façades. You build the four side sections one after another in the same way, and the repetition is noticeable.
How is the mast on the LEGO Empire State Building attached?
With a single bar in a clip. That is why the mast of silver parts slips easily when you dust or move the model, and you then straighten it again. On the real building, the spire was originally meant as a mooring mast for airships.
Questions about the BlockAbo rental model
How does BlockAbo actually work?
You pick a set from our collection and we send it to your door for free. You build it, keep it as long as you like, and send it back when you are ready for the next one. After a month at the earliest, with no upper limit. Then you choose your next set.
What does BlockAbo cost and what is included?
There are three options: the single rental at a one-off CHF 42.–, the monthly plan at CHF 39.– per month and the yearly plan at CHF 29.– per month. Included are the complete set, delivery to you and the cleaning. You cover the return, and the label is already in the box.
Can I cancel the subscription at any time?
Yes. The monthly plan can be cancelled to the end of any month, with no reason and no notice period. You send the set back and that is that. The yearly plan commits you for twelve months and costs about a quarter less per month in return.
How hygienic are rented LEGO sets?
Every set goes through our quality check after it comes back, before it goes out again. We check its condition, wash the sets regularly at 30 °C with soap and keep track of whether every piece is there. That way a clean and complete set reaches you.
Why are all the pieces mixed in one bag?
The sets are checked between rentals and washed regularly. That is why the numbered bags from the original packaging are gone, and you get all the pieces loose in one large wash bag. Up to about 2'000 pieces you build straight from the bag; for bigger sets a bit of sorting first is worth it. For the return you sort nothing: take the set fully apart and put every piece back in the wash bag.
Why are there no building instructions in the box?
Paper instructions and sticker sheets do not last many rentals, so we send the sets without them. The instructions for every set are free at lego.com/en-ch/service/building-instructions and in the LEGO Builder app. Search there by set number or name.
What happens if pieces are missing or break?
Up to ten lost small pieces are no problem and are included in the price. It happens, vacuum cleaners are merciless. We only get in touch for larger damage or missing large pieces. You do not have to go over the carpet with tweezers.
How fast does the set reach me?
Orders placed before 14:00 go out the same working day. After that Swiss Post usually takes one to two working days. We deliver anywhere in Switzerland and delivery to you is free.
Why is renting more sustainable than buying?
A LEGO set is usually built once and then sits on a shelf or in a cellar for years. With us the same set passes through eight to ten people. For the same number of sets built, that is up to 90 % less newly produced plastic.
