About the LEGO Sydney Opera House set

The Sydney Opera House as a 63 cm wide model, built on a blue baseplate of 48 × 48 studs that had never existed in this colour before. The white roof shells stand at an angle and interlock as they do on the original. Beneath them sit the foyers with their tinted glass fronts, the forecourt on the harbour with its lamps, and the broad flight of steps. The base is made almost entirely of dark tan bricks, among them rare low slopes. There are no minifigures.

The 2’989 pieces take 9 to 12 hours. The base goes quickly; the time is in the roof shells, and towards the end they become noticeably repetitive. Finished, the model needs 63 × 38 cm of floor space, more than a normal shelf offers. LEGO retired it at the end of 2016, and new it cost CHF 369.–. Rented, it stays with you for a few weeks and then goes back.

Common questions about the LEGO Sydney Opera House

How long does the LEGO Sydney Opera House (10234) take to build?

Plan on 9 to 12 hours for the 2989 pieces. The base of dark tan bricks goes quickly. Most of the time goes into the roof shells, which you build one after the other and which repeat over many similar steps.

How big is the LEGO Sydney Opera House when built?

The model is 63 cm wide, 38 cm deep and 28 cm high. It does not fit on a normal shelf; you need a sideboard or a table with about 65 × 40 cm of free space.

Can you still buy the LEGO Sydney Opera House?

No. Set 10234 came out in September 2013, was only sold by LEGO itself and was retired at the end of 2016. New, it cost CHF 369.– in Switzerland, and since then it has only been available second-hand or from collectors. Rented, you build it once without having to find room for it afterwards.

Is the LEGO Sydney Opera House hard to build?

It is rated 16+, and that fits. The walls are angled, and many parts are attached sideways rather than stacked, to create the rounded forms and fine edges. The instructions are clear, but you have to look closely at the angles.

What is special about the baseplate of the LEGO Sydney Opera House?

It is blue and 48 × 48 studs. LEGO had never made the large plate in this colour before. It stands for the harbour water on which the base with its lamps sits. On top of that come lots of dark tan bricks, among them the rare low slopes 1 × 1 × 2/3 and 1 × 2 × 2/3.

Questions about the BlockAbo rental model

How does BlockAbo actually work?

You pick a set from our collection and we send it to your door for free. You build it, keep it as long as you like, and send it back when you are ready for the next one. After a month at the earliest, with no upper limit. Then you choose your next set.

What does BlockAbo cost and what is included?

There are three options: the single rental at a one-off CHF 42.–, the monthly plan at CHF 39.– per month and the yearly plan at CHF 29.– per month. Included are the complete set, delivery to you and the cleaning. You cover the return, and the label is already in the box.

Can I cancel the subscription at any time?

Yes. The monthly plan can be cancelled to the end of any month, with no reason and no notice period. You send the set back and that is that. The yearly plan commits you for twelve months and costs about a quarter less per month in return.

How hygienic are rented LEGO sets?

Every set is washed at 30 °C with soap after it comes back, dried, and checked brick by brick for completeness. Only then does it go out again. So you never get a set somebody else has been through unchecked.

Why are all the pieces mixed in one bag?

After every rental the set is washed and checked brick by brick for completeness. After that the numbered bags from the original packaging are gone, and you get all the pieces loose in one large wash bag. Up to about 2'000 pieces you build straight from the bag; for bigger sets a bit of sorting first is worth it. For the return you sort nothing: take the set fully apart and put every piece back in the wash bag.

Why are there no building instructions in the box?

Paper instructions and sticker sheets do not last many rentals, so we send the sets without them. The instructions for every set are free at lego.com/en-ch/service/building-instructions and in the LEGO Builder app. Search there by set number or name.

What happens if pieces are missing or break?

Up to ten lost small pieces are no problem and are included in the price. It happens, vacuum cleaners are merciless. We only get in touch for larger damage or missing large pieces. You do not have to go over the carpet with tweezers.

How fast does the set reach me?

Orders placed before 14:00 go out the same working day. After that Swiss Post usually takes one to two working days. We deliver anywhere in Switzerland and delivery to you is free.

Why is renting more sustainable than buying?

A LEGO set is usually built once and then sits on a shelf or in a cellar for years. With us the same set passes through eight to ten people. For the same number of sets built, that is up to 90 % less newly produced plastic.
